I’m sure that the last time you heard ‘Landslide’ you thought “You know what, what this dark introspective song about a dissolving relationship is great, but what it really needs is an up-tempo backbeat and a string section!” I’m usually a big fan of remixes and re-interpretations of songs but ‘Landslide’ is a song that was perfect the way it was. These three remixes were taken off of a promo single that was released to promote Fleetwood Mac’s reunion album/concert The Dance. I’m posting them mostly for the sake of just posting them, they are kind of interesting to hear but really just want to make you listen to the original version. It’s not as bad as the remix to ‘Big Love’ though, eek.

I’ve lived in Pittsburgh for about three years now and I love the place. One of the best things about this town are the surprising amount of quality record stores they have. I’ve mentioned the awesomeness of Jerry’s Records several times over by now, so I thought in this post I’d take the chance to single out some other retail outlets in the Pittsburgh area, some good, some not-so-good.

I got this single at Half-Price Books, which is a semi-national chain that sells used books, VHS tapes, DVDs, CDs, computer software and LPs. It’s a great place to buy stuff but a lousy place to sell. A while ago I was trying to unload my laserdisc collection and there only offered me 4 dollars for 40 laserdiscs. Not four bucks a disc, but four bucks total. I was able to get around 30 bucks for them at an Exchange down the street. Thankfully they’re idiots when it comes to selling stuff too, because I was able to get some great singles there for less than a dollar. I also picked up a rare Mindless Self Indulgence promo for a buck. These are three tracks taken off of the 12” single of ‘Finest Worksong’ that I got from them a few weeks ago. The two remixes are excellent and the live version of ‘Time After Time’ is actually a medley of a few different songs, including Peter Gabriel’s ‘Red Rain’. This track was a little scratchy and I did what I could to fix it, but it doesn’t sound that great. Sorry about that.

If I don’t start posting Erasure more often my backlog of semi-gay dance tunes is going to become overwhelming. I got their latest on order at Dave’s Music Mine, a quality CD store that shares space with Jerry’s Records. It’s a good store, but is a little unorganized and disheveled. I’m willing to credit that to the fact that they’ve only been in that location for a few months though and they are still trying to figure out how to use the space. They have a ton of great used CDs and sometimes get some pretty oddball stuff that’s not easy to find new, like the Depeche Mode box sets. Check them out if you are ever in Pittsburgh – they get The Lost Turntable Seal Of Approval. These Erasure remixes are off of the single for ‘Stay With Me’ more from it later in the week.

Garbage
Bleed Like Me (Kupper’s Klub Extravaganza)
My collection of Garbage singles is severely lacking. In fact this is the only one I have, and the B-side instrumental was so fucking scratched I couldn’t record it. I got this one at Eide’s Entertainment, another locally-owned store here in Pittsburgh. I have mixed feelings about Eide’s. On the plus side they have a ton of stuff and it’s an absolutely huge place. Throughout their three floors you can buy comic books, new and used CDs, VHS tapes, laserdiscs, DVDs and books. They also have a decent selection of LPs and 45s as well. Just don’t expect to get much cheap there. A record I could buy for 10 bucks at Dave’s or Jerry’s would probably run twice as much at Eides. They sell a lot of bootleg videos of out-of-print and rare stuff, which is cool, but the quality of them usually sucks. I swear their copy of Urgh! was taken off of the same video that’s at my local video store. Most importantly, the people that work there can really be a bunch of assholes. They have a no cell phone policy there, which I kind of understand (trying to ring someone up while they blabber on their phone is amazingly annoying) but if you’re going to run a store that is so massively huge that people could easily spend hours in it, it’s unrealistic to expect them to not get any phone calls during that time. The clerks constantly bitch and moan in front of the customers and kind of go out of their way not to help you. Finally, the owner seems to have some ill-advised grudge against the local Exchange. Two years ago one of his employees stole a few thousand dollars of stuff from his store and sold it to the Exchange. After he found out he expected The Exchange to just give him the stuff back. It sucks that his stuff got stolen, but he shouldn’t expect The Exchange to take a two-grand loss just because he’s not good at screening his employees. I only go here when I have to.

I’m really bummed out that my gigantic Howard The Duck post didn’t get a bigger response. Sometimes the internet confuses me. I’m never surprised when I get a lot of hits. It probably sounds pretentious of me, but since I think everything I post is totally awesome (if it wasn’t I wouldn’t post it) I just kind of assume that everyone else will agree and flock here bask in my super-neato-keen-awesomeness. It’s cool either way though, but to those of you who do think I’m consistently amazing, please spread the word about the Howard The Duck post, because I’m really proud of that one for some strange reason!

Whenever I hear a really good Lords Of Acid song I just picture all of them sitting in the studio humping the recording equipment. That would probably ruin the mixers, but whatever. I’ve always been a fan of sleazy, disgusting hardcore music like Mindless Self Indulgence and Peaches, and I guess Lords Of Acid helped to invent the style back in the 90s, so it only makes sense that I’d dig them the most. The awesomely titled ‘b[Eat] Me Up Mix by Ming & FS’ is a little bit of a let down, but the ‘Special Blend Mix’ more than makes up for it with its pounding guitars and beats. It’ll probably make you wanna fuck the person closest to you or beat the fucking shit out of them…or both if you’re into that kind of thing (don’t forget the safe word).

A little over a month ago I picked up the 12” single of the theme song to Howard The Duck. I was very happy.

Well, that was just an appetizer, because now I present to you the complete soundtrack to Howard The Duck! I had been looking for this one for a very long time and my excitement over finally finding it actually kind of scared the guys in the record store, who refer to Howard The Duck as “that movie where Lea Thompson almost fucks a duck.”

Whatever, they just don’t know real art when they see it. The album also came with a totally awesome Howard The Duck poster that I would love to frame and hang up in my room, but I want to get laid again at some point, and I think the two are mutually exclusive. Anyways, I dug up a lot of info on this hidden gem so lets get started:

Who knew Caroline In The City (that link goes to a Caroline In The City fansite…yes there is such a thing) could sing new-wave so damn good? In addition to Lea Thompson on vocals, both ‘Howard The Duck’ and ‘It Don’t Come Cheap’ feature Joe Walsh on guitar. But who else was in Cherry Bomb? I suspect many of the instruments on these tracks were either played by Dolby or session musicians, but backing vocals are credited to the women who starred as the band in the film. While none of them are household names, you might have seen them in other films and TV shows since ‘Howard’ crashed and burned. Holly Robinson (now Holly Robinson Peete) has been on 21 Jump Street and Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper. Dominique Dalavas hasn’t acted much since Howard The Duck, and now she’s in the L.A. band Drag. According to their website she scored a number one hit single in Belgium. Finally, there was Liz Segal. In addition to starring in Howard The Duck she had the misfortune of being in Grease 2. She was a writer on Charmed for a bit, and her sister is Katey (Peg Bundy) Segal. Not surprisingly, Howard The Duck is nowhere to be found on any of these actresses’ homepages.

I’m On My Way
Okay, who the fuck is Tata Vega? She sang the Oscar-nominated song “Miss Celie’s Blues (Sister)” from The Color Purple. That tune was written by Quincy Jones and Lionel Richie, and it lost to another Richie tune, “Say You, Say Me” from the White Knights soundtrack. Accoring to Tata’s MySpace page she’s appeared in the soundtracks to Forrest Gump and The Lion King, although the IMDB doesn’t mention either of those (it does have her credited as the “Singing Nun” from Spy Hard, so she has that going for her, which is nice. You won’t see any mention of Howard The Duck on her MySpace.

Thomas Dolby
Don’t Turn Away
In the movie this song is performed by Cherry’s Bomb but I guess Dolby had high hopes for this tune as he performs it himself on the soundtrack. As much as I love Thomas Dolby I prefer the version sung by Lea Thompson, I think the song works better with female vocals. This song, like the rest of the songs on the soundtrack were co-written by Allee Willis. While she’s not a household name, her music is. Her work includes:

  • The theme song to Friends
  • ‘September’ and ‘Boogie Wonderland’ by Earth, Wind and Fire
  • ‘Neutron Dance’ by The Pointer Sisters
  • ‘What Have I Done To Deserve This’ by Pet Shop Boys

She actually does mention Howard The Duck on her site, but she also wrote songs for Richard Simmons, so I guess she has nothing to hide.

Bonus!
The Original Score
If there already wasn’t enough talent associated with the Howard The Duck soundtrack, Lucas was able to get John Barry to write the score. Barry’s best-known for writing the James Bond theme, but he’s composed scores for over a hundred movies, including Dances With Wolves and Indecent Proposal. He also wrote the score to the 1976 remake of King Kong, so he can’t even say that Howard The Duck was the worst movie he worked on.

Yay! I am back in lovely Pittsburgh. I missed my apartment. I missed my quietly-confused Chinese roommate. I missed my goldfish. I missed my computer and my mess of a computer desk. And I missed my happy hard drive full of music and the pile of vinyl sitting next to it begging to be recorded. Luckily while I was trapped in Northwest Ohio I was able to pick up some quality stuff, most of which I’m getting out of the way by posting tonight.

If anyone ever accidentally winds up in the greater Toledo area you can make you stay a little less depressing by heading down to 4020 Secor Rd., home of The Culture Clash. Risen from the ashes of Toledo mainstay Boogie Records, The Culture Clash is a bitchin’ record store full of awesome rarities, imports and the latest indie-releases. Sometimes you can even pick up a sweet little bonus exclusive single or poster also. The place even smells cool. I’m glad The Culture Clash picked up the slack left when Bowling Green’s resident awesome record store The Mad Hatter turned all metal.

The Arcade Fire

I’m not that into The Arcade Fire right now. Don’t get me wrong, I love Neon Bible and still listen to Funeral now and then, but I’m kind of in a “fuck you” mood right now and need something a little heavier. My only complaint with the Canadian indie-rock scene (other than the fact that you can nearly trace every band in Canada to Dan Bejar) is that it’s not really bringing the rock. If someone in the middle of this scene deciding to crank up the tempo and really jam on their axe then I might get more behind the scene. This track is the B-side to The Arcade Fire’s single for ‘Keep The Car Running.’

Here I Dreamt I Was An Architect
Pitchforck Media called Patti Smith’s Twelve a “pointless misstep”. And while I am not a huge fan of cover albums I figure that if Patti Smith wants to records an album entirely of other people’s music we should probably let her. The album isn’t great (I’d probably give it 3 or 3.5 stars) but it has some great cuts on it. Highlights for me include her down-home blues rendition of The Allman Bros. ‘Midnight Rider’, a surprisingly faithful take of ‘Everybody Wants To Rule The World’ and her insane bluegrass reworking of ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’. And while the world didn’t really need another version of ‘White Rabbit’ it’s nice to hear it sung by a woman who isn’t a heartless drunken whore. These two additional covers are from a 7” promo that was given to certain independent record stores (including The Culture Clash). ‘Perfect Day’ has been covered by everyone from Duran Duran to half of Europe all at once, but Smith’s haunting and heart-breaking take on the song is probably the best since Lou Reed’s original (although I’m still a sucker for the glossy Duran Duran version). ‘Here I Dreamt I Was An Architect’ is a cover of a Decemberists song, the original unheard by me.

When I first heard With Teeth I didn’t like it that much, but it really grew on me over time. Considering the strength of that album I was surprised that Trent returned so quickly with his latest record. Year Zero was released just two years after With Teeth, the shortest time period between NIN album releases (Downward Spiral and Broken came out two years apart as well, but Broken was just an EP). Unlike With Teeth I’ve embraced Year Zero from the get go, and I think that Survivalism is his best single since Hurt. This remix of that track is off of the 7” single. The odd spelling, punctuation and parenthesis in the song title is exactly as it appears on the record. For those of you who don’t know, Saul Williams is a great poet/rapper and is worth checking out if you get the chance. The remixes of ‘The Hand That Feeds’ are off of a promo 12” I picked up, and are not on the Everyday Is Exactly The Same EP that featured two other remixes of the same song.

It seems that quite a few blogs mentioned my stupid little rant about how much I hate idiot concert-goers. At one blog someone said that my anger towards people making out at concerts shows that I haven’t “gotten any” in a long time. That’s not fair because it is totally impossible to defend yourself against an attack like that. If I go on the offensive and say something like, “hey motherfucker, I get pussy every night” then I sound like I’m over compensating. If I ignore it then the person who said it assumes they are right. I’m going to let it be and say that I’m very happy that my blog is getting enough exposure that people are starting to speculate about my sex life.

Between songs like this and the entire soundtrack/film experience that was The Last Dragon (sho-nuff!), it’s amazing that Motown made it out of the 80s in one piece. This song is four minutes of “joystick as penis” and “high score as fucking” metaphors. Pure genius. When I’m making out with people at Morrissey concerts I think of this song.

I Feel Better Than James Brown (Berwick Beat Mix)
The more I listen to Was (Not Was) the more impressed I become. While I used to consider them nothing more than one-hit wonders now I recognize them as the creators of some of the most unique songs of the 80s. This remix is eight minutes of insane ranting backed by nonsensical pseudo-African lyrics and a killer beat. The rants are not spoken by Bruce Campbell, even though the dude kind of sounds like him.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Atomic Dog is a song that I will never get sick of no matter how many times I hear it. The same is true for these remixes from the 90s that feature some random rapping by wild-haired rapper Coolio. Whatever happened to Coolio? The last I saw him he was on Fear Factor battling Donny Osmond and Kelly Preston, which sounds like some sort of unholy trinity of reality show guest stars.

So I went to see Morrissey in Ann Arbor last night. It was an amazing show. The boy is at the top of his game and has a stage presence that is unlike anything I’ve seen before. Guys go batshit crazy for that dude! I don’t know how many tried rushing the stage, I lost count around 10 or so. It must be a great self-esteem boost for a dude in his 40s to see guys half his age risk life and limb for the chance to almost touch him.

The only thing that annoyed me about the show was all the idiots that were sitting around me. Nearly every single type of annoying concert-going person was jammed into the seats around me and I damn near lost my mind. It amazes how many people don’t know how to act at concerts. Because of this I present:

The Lost Turntable Guide To Proper Concert Etiquette.

Rule No. 1: Shut the fuck up. You’re surrounded by hundreds of people who paid good money to hear live music, not hear you blare into your friend’s ear about how much your best friend Tiffany is a bitch for hitting on your boyfriend. Once the lights go down, your conversation stops. The music is really loud for a reason.

Rule No. 2: Put your tongue back in your fucking mouth. Making out to “How Soon Is Now” is bad enough, making out while sitting in a cramped concert hall to any song is just uncalled for. If you’re at a concert with fixed seating and the person sitting behind you has to move their knee so you can stick your tongue in your significant other’s ear – then your are way too far into their “buffer zone” to initiate such a graphic PDA. The next time a girl in a row below me starts sucking face with her boyfriend I’m going to grab her head and nudge her to my crotch. Hey baby, if you’re going to grind yourself all over someone when your that close to me I’m going to consider that an invitation to a threesome. And guys, if your girlfriend starts making out with you in public and you can’t….hide your excitement…then you need to go somewhere and take care of that. You’ll poke somebody’s eye out with that thing.

Rule No. 3: STAND THE FUCK UP! If everyone in front of you and everyone behind you is standing up, don’t complain about not being able to see. Get off your fat ass (put your hands in your pants if you have to hide your “love” for the music) so you can see. It’s not that hard. If you pull on the shirt of the guy in front of you in hopes that he will sit down, he is given the right to punch you in the face. Sorry, that’s the rule. It’s also a rule that you have to stand up and scream like an idiot when “How Soon is Now” starts.

Rule No. 4: Don’t bitch about being short. Inversely speaking, don’t bitch about someone in front of you who is very tall. I’m six and a half feet tall. Me being tall is not going to stop me from enjoying live music from the best possible position. If you don’t like it then move. I’m not going to, especially if I was there first and you stood behind me for the entire opening act and didn’t complain once. The only time I ever called a woman the c-word to her face was when she yelled at me for blocking her view. I have no control over my height honey, go fuck yourself. If you ask nicely I can try to move, but you’re the one with the problem, not me.

Rule No. 5: Don’t yell out song titles. Look, if Morrissey wants to sing ‘Bigmouth Strikes Again’ he’s going to. Your drunken, barely coherent scream (that he can’t even hear) isn’t going to convince him otherwise. On a related note, if you still yell “FREEBIRD!!” at a show then you should be made sterile as a service to the future of humanity.

Depeche Mode, New Order and Erasure all in the same post! That’s a lot of synthesizer. I’m off to Toledo tomorrow morning (happy happy joy joy) and while there my only access to the internet will by my stepmom’s lousy laptop. So while I’m stuck in the barren wasteland of Northwest Ohio updates might be a little sparse. And in case anyone was wondering, I’m still looking for a good solution to my ever-growing bandwidth problem, so if anyone has one please let me know.

First things first. Thanks to the 80 billion people who let me know that Boymerang is the name of a producer and not the name of the remix. Still doesn’t change the fact that it’s a fucking awful name.

Anyways, I have so much stuff to get through that I completely abandoned the idea of themed posts and will just be throwing stuff up randomly for the next month or so. I have so much acid house right now that if I dedicated myself solely to that genre I’d be on it for weeks – and I don’t want to use up all my ecstasy and glow sticks that quickly.

So I’ll posting a lot of various crap in the coming weeks, which leads me to my next topic. I currently have server space through Apple with their .Mac account. While it’s been good to me for the past year, if I continue to post at this pace and grow in popularity (it’s a well-known fact that all the cool kids go to The Lost Turntable) I’m going to outgrow their services in a month or so. Does anyone know of a good cheap provider of server space? The amount of space isn’t an issue, I need a place that can give me a buttload of bandwidth. Right now I get 250GB from Apple and that’s barely cutting it. I need at least 50-100 gigs more. I’m never asking for donations and I refuse to use shit services like Sendspace or Rapidshare, so if you have a suggestion please let me know, preferably by email (address is on the sidebar). Good advice will be rewarded with baked goods, or some Mp3s maybe.

More wacky remixes by the merry pranksters as The KLF. The ‘Klonk Blip Every Trip’ mix sounds nothing at all like the original version and is very chill and ambient. The other two mixes are more what you would expect and are totally kicking. These came off of a 12” single.

For most people Erasure would qualify as a ‘guilty pleasure.’ But when you are an unabashed fan of Erasure, I guess that John Cougar Mellencamp would be a guilty pleasure. It’s all ‘eye of the beholder’ man. This acoustic version John’s best tune is off of a promo single. It’s on one of his re-released CDs too.

Holy shit this song is catchier than the that disease in The Stand. Tin Machine was Bowie’s attempt at being in a band and served as a way for him to escape the unending pressure he felt to deliver another ‘China Girl’. The band was not liked critically and they only recorded two albums before David Bowie went back to being David Bowie. A lot of people (including me) think that their music was just ahead of its time and that people weren’t ready for Tin Machine’s unique breed of dance-fused rock. This awesome extended mix of one of their best songs (which tanked when it was released) serves as a solid argument to that case.

I scored a massively massive crate of 12” singles, rare soundtracks and all-around awesomeness this week. Many favorites of Lost Turntable will be making return appearances in the coming weeks, so keep checking in. Hopefully I’ll get most of them recorded before I have to make a week long trip to the wasteland that is Toledo, Ohio.

These are the last two remixes off of that promo single I’ve been posting tracks off of all week. I think ‘Under Your Skank’ wins my vote as the best remix title of all time that isn’t an Erasure song. No one can compete with remix titles like ‘No Panties Mix’, ‘Orbital Southsea Isle Of Holy Beats Mix’ and ‘Truly In Love With The Marx. Bros Mix.’

I have no idea who Soul Hooligan is, but I buy anything with Dan The Automator’s name on it. These two remixes are off of a 12” promo are great indie-rap tunes.

10-year-old Garage/drum-n-bass remixes about digital technology. Sounds like something the kids in the movie Hackers would ‘hack the planet’ to. Still good though. ‘Boymerang Mix’ gets my vote for one of the worst remix names of all time, sounds like some strange gay porno involving Aborigine hunting tools.
