Happy New Year with Madonna and White Zombie

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season. I hope no one’s cell phone was stolen in a hipster coffee house. I hope no one’s laptop was smashed by a wheelchair. Those would not be fun things to happen during one’s holiday break. Trust me.

Moving onto more upbeat news, this year will mark the 10th anniversary of Lost Turntable. This fact BLOWS MY FUCKING MIND.

I want to plan something special for the anniversary month, which is this March. Although I really haven’t figured out what that would be. So if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

This has to be one of the longest running MP3 blogs at this point, right? I mean, who the fuck is left? Every blog that inspired me to create this blog is either completely offline at this point or hasn’t been updated in years. Quitters.

Okay, so here’s the thing.

When the Playstation came out there weren’t that many good games for it. One of the best was the original Ridge Racer. Now, I don’t know if this was an advertised feature of the game or something I just read in a magazine, but since the game loaded entirely to the system’s RAM, once it booted up you could take out the PS1 game disc and put in any old CD you wanted, which would then serve as the game’s soundtrack. For some reason, my go to CD was Astro-Creep: 2000.

I have incredibly vivid memories of racing along to “Electric Head” and using the track as an audio checkpoint – if I could get to one corner of the track before the chorus kicked in, I knew I was doing good. Why the fuck this memory sticks in my head and not, y’know, my boyfriend’s birthday, I have no idea.

Anyways, these remixes are by KMFDM and they hella sound like remixes of White Zombie songs by KMFDM. So your enjoyment of them will probably depend on how appealing that sounds to you. They just make me want to play Ridge Racer.

 

Madonna
GHV2 (Tracy Young’s Shake & Stir Club Mix)
Madonna does not make me think of any video game in particular save for this obscure Japanese arcade game that features a brief chiptune cover of “Like A Virgin.” I guess I could also associate her with the Turbografx-16 game Vigilante, as the protagonist’s kidnapped girlfriend’s name is Madonna for some reason. I doubt she endorsed that cameo.

This track is a megamix of tracks taken from her 2001 greatest hits album GHV2. There were several versions of this mix released, albeit none commercially – all were promo and DJ releases only. This one is one of the rarest, and is only on a handful of 12″ promo singles and CDrs. If I ever get around to finishing that mega Madonna singles guide, I’ll be sure to go into more detail there.

Industrial Power-Pop Madness

Okay, Industrial Power-Pop doesn’t exist. If it did I think it would be the greatest thing ever though. I might have a massive rant or two in the coming days, so consider this the calm before the fuckstorm.

New Cheap Trick motherfucker! No, not here, here. Check it out because it’s totally awesome because Cheap Trick is one of the best bands of all time and if you don’t think so you suck. That’s my critical analysis for the night.

Anyways, like I said before, the songs I am posting tonight are not new Cheap Trick songs, they are in fact old Cheap Trick songs. “Anytime” is from their 1997 self-titled release, an album that I believe is woefully out of print. It’s a sleazy song about boning, in other words classic Cheap Trick. “Baby Talk” and “Brontosaurus” (which is a cover of a song by The Move) were only available on a two-track EP that came with some copies of the 1997 album. You can thank my mom for these tracks, since she was one of five people that bought this album when it came out, handing it off to me several years later.

Repost Prelude: A Massive Industrial Attack

I haven’t gotten a lot of repost requests, which has made me sad. However, I think I know why this is. I’ve been doing this for three years now, and since my archives aren’t exactly organized, that means its kind of a pain in the ass for people to go through and search for what they like. In an attempt to rectify this I have made a document that has listed nearly every single song I’ve posted on The Lost Turntable since day one:

The MS Word Doc looks a lot better than the HTML file, this list was compiled from a shitload of cutting and pasting, and it shows in the way the HTML tries to read it. If you can, download the word doc and save yourself some frustration. Good news though, from this post on everything is going to be tagged, which will hopefully allow for easier searching.

That should make things easier for everyone, leave your requests in the comments section. Once again I’d like to remind everyone that just because they request something doesn’t mean I’m going to repost it. Some stuff has gotten lost over the years, some stuff is in shitty quality and needs to be re-recorded and other stuff I just don’t give a shit about anymore. However, I will try to honor as many requests as possible.

And to Dave The Ox, who wants a lossless version of Twin Freaks, keep wanting. Sorry, I can’t even record vinyl on a lossless format, so giving you FLAC files of it would be kind of stupid.

I’m currently in the process of reviewing KMFDM’s newest album, Blitz. Want a sneak peak of my critique? It sounds like KMFDM. I mean, if you dug every other album they made there’s no reason you won’t dig this one, just don’t expect anything new. I was a half-KMFDM fan back in the 90s, discovering them after I got into Nine Inch Nails and pseudo-industrial like Stabbing Westward. I really wasn’t ready for it at the time and I think I’m ready to give them a second go.
“Liebeslied” is one of their best tracks, at least this version is. It contains illegal samples from “O Fortuna” which had to be pulled on subsequent releases of Naive (which was retitled Naive – Hell To Go). It’s a shame that it had to be pulled because the samples work well with the song, especially the hard synth riff. Anyways, finding this sucker on a CD nowadays can be difficult, so enjoy. The quality of this one isn’t perfect, but I’m not the one who encoded it, so don’t blame me. Blame the pirates.

Even though I’m in a surprisingly good mood tonight I wanted to have an all industrial post, but I couldn’t find anything else in my collection that fit the bill. So instead here are Seven remixes of a song off of Massive Attack’s worst album. You may ask why, I ask why not. These are from a 2LP 12” single and listening to all of them all the way through in one sitting is a good cure for insomnia.
