Emergency David Bowie Post

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Sometimes a David Bowie emergency arises, and his music must be posted. It happens.

David Bowie
Cat People (Putting Out Fire) (Australian Promo Extended Version)
This remix is not from me. It is from Dreamtimemix, the coolest MP3 blog on the motherfucking internet. I’ve been looking for this track for far too long, and it turned out that the guy behind this blog posted it a while ago. Becoming a total hypocrite, I begged him to repost it and he did. I’m putting it up to help give his servers a break. If you like it, go tell him how awesome he is.

There are a lot of different versions of this track, and this one is the rarest by far, only released in Australia, it’s almost a full three minutes longer than the soundtrack version and over four minutes longer than the vastly inferior version that appears on Let’s Dance. This amazing, truly classic track is getting a well-deserved second life now that Quentin Tarantino decided to put it in his latest flick, Inglourious Basterds. Describing how it’s used would be a huge spoiler, but it fits the scene so well that it’s almost like Tarantino wrote the script around its use, which actually would not surprise me. This song is a bloody masterpiece, download it. It’s probably the best song that Bowie released in the 80s.

Bonus Bowie!
Sound + Vision (808 GiftMix)
Sound + Vision (808 ‘Lectric Blue Remix Instrumental)
Sound + Vision (David Richards Remix 1991)

Since I hate doing one song posts, here’s a little bonus treat. In 1991 a four-track EP was released, credited to David Bowie vs. 808 State. It featured three remixes of the classic Bowie track (and the original version, which I am not posting), all presumably done by the legendary electronica group 808 State. These are great remixes and well worth the download.

Full update later this week.

What did you do tonight?

Saturday, August 8th, 2009

I didn’t do much….

Other than seeing Depeche Motherfucking Mode!

Mini-report to be placed here in a few hours.

Did anyone ever find out if Annie was okay?

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

Fuckers from Hair are on Conan right now dancing in the audience. Hey guys, 1967 called, the 60s are over, take your hippie dippie bullshit and cram it.

God I hate that damned musical…

Anyways, here are the remaining Michael Jackson remixes I promised. This Is It. No more…unless I somehow find more 12” singles.

Billie Jean (Dirty Funker’s “This Is Not It” Remix)
Billie Jean (This Dirty Dub Remix)
These were from a bootleg 12” single, by a guy calling himself the Dirty Funker. It’s a red record and the artwork on the label cribs art from the planned This Is It series of concerts (the beginning of this mix even samples the press conference announcing the This Is It shows). They’re kind of pointless, but the techno bass-heavy beats aren’t too bad.

Smooth Criminal (Extended Dance Mix)
Smooth Criminal (Extended Dance Mix Radio Edit)
Smooth Criminal (Annie Mix)
Smooth Criminal (Dub Mix)
Smooth Criminal (A Capella)
I think I mentioned before that “Smooth Criminal” is one of my favorite Michael Jackson songs. I was going to declare it my favorite of all time, but it’ll have to tie with Beat It, Billie Jean, PYT, Dirty Diana, Leave me Alone, Give In To Me, Jam, Scream, Morphine (check it out, it’s a pretty rad tune that you probably haven’t heard), Earth Song, and They Don’t Really Care About Us (you try to pick a favorite Michael Jackson song, it’s not easy!)

However, “Smooth Criminal” is without a doubt my favorite Michael Jackson video. But make sure you watch the best version. The most complete version of the Smooth Criminal video is part of the movie Moonwalker, which is not available in America. Luckily there’s YouTube. The version that most people know is this one, which is just a hair shorter than the Moonwalker cut, taking out some of the crazy-ass moaning interpretive dance that’s in the middle. Above everything avoid this version, which is a poorly edited, sped-up version. I’m not the only person who thinks Smooth Criminal is Michael’s magnum video opus, check out this hysterical review of the Moonwalker movie by That Guy With Glasses, one of my favorite pop culture critics on the web.

I previously posted the extended mix, but this one is a direct rip from the vinyl single I picked up, as are the additional remixes.

Who Is It (Patience Mix)
Who Is It (The Most Patient Mix)
Who Is It (IHS Mix)
Who Is It (P-Man Dub)
Who Is It (Brothers In Rhythm House Mix)
Who Is It (Tribal Version)
Who Is It (Brothers Cool Dub)
Who Is It (Lakeside Dub)
This isn’t one of my favorite Michael Jackson tunes, and is probably my second-least favorite song off of Dangerous (the first is In The Closet – I actively hate that song). However, some of these remixes are quite good. My favorite is the Brothers In Rhythm House Mix, which transforms the song into an ultra-corny 90s house track. Moby would love it.

Beat It (Moby’s Sub Mix)
Well speak of the bald devil! This is an odd one. This originally appeared as the B-side to the American version of the Who Is It single, but it later popped up on the soundtrack to Zoolander for some strange reason. With many of the Dangerous singles it seemed that MJ was taking his back catalog and giving some prominent electronic artists of the time a go. Moby got “Beat It,” the Brothers in Rhythm got “Wanna Be Startin’ Something” and Masters at Work got to mix “Rock With You.” I haven’t heard any of these mixes aside from this Moby one, so if anyone wants to post a link to some in the comments section I would be most appreciative.

I think I’m the only person in the world who likes this remix of Beat It. It’s definitely odd and not for everyone, but give it a chance, Moby deconstructs the shit out it, shifting the guitar solo to the front, chopping up the synth opening of the original and making the verses very sparse, cutting out everything but a simple beat and Micheal’s voice.

Highlights From The Light Of Day

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

Light Of Day was a movie that came out in 1987 starring Joan Jett and Michael J. Fox as two musicians struggling to make it in the tough, no-holds-barred world of the Cleveland bar scene. It was a box-office dud that went nowhere and is remembered now more for its (out-of-print) soundtrack and that Trent Reznor is in one scene for about two seconds.

While the soundtrack itself is out of print, most of the songs on it were either from other albums to begin with or have since been included on other albums, so I’m not featuring the entire album, only some highlights that are still hard-to-find, as well as the title track, which is just awesome.

The Barbusters
Light Of Day
It’s All Coming Down Tonight
Rude Mood
All three of these tracks are credited to The Barbusters, which was the band in the film. “Light Of Day” is the stand-out, which makes sense since Bruce Springsteen wrote the tune. “It’s All Coming Down Tonight” is kind of meh, while “Rude Mood” is an instrumental blues song and a cover to boot, the original being by Stevie Ray Vaughan.

The Hunzz -Rabbit’s Got The Gun
Now, I’ve never seen Light Of Day, but I’m assuming that The Hunnz is a band that Joan Jett joins later in the movie, since she sings on this track too. The Hunnz are actually a band called Joined Forces, but I don’t know anything else about them.

Michael J. Fox – You Got No Place To Go
That’s right, Michael J. Fox decided to perform a song solo for the movie. It’s…not bad, but Fox’s vocals are about as strained as can possibly be for this one.

Rick Cox, Chas Smith, Jon C. Clarke & Michael Boddicker – Elegy
This is a quiet instrumental number that I’m betting closed out the film. It’s very minimal and I’m kind of shocked that it took four people to record it. Of those four the only one I recognize is Boddicker, he’s probably known to nerds as the composer of the Buckaroo Bonzai theme. He also is a session musician and has worked with Michael Jackson in the past.

In case you’re wondering the other tracks from the soundtrack were:
The Barbusters (Joan Jett) – This Means War
The Fabulous Thunderbirds – Twist It Off
Ian Hunter – Cleveland Rocks (Live)
Dave Edmunds – Stay With Me Tonight
Bon Jovi – Only Lonely

Get the live version of “Cleveland Rocks”, it’s bitchi’.

Tole-Doh! Rock

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

I’m heading for the not-at-all greener pastures of Toledo Ohio for the next few days. So this will be the last update of the week. I’m twice as depressed as you are about that fact, I can assure you. The stuff from tonight are all Record Store Day exclusives, most of them being from the Record Store Day 2009 Edition exclusive LP. Half of it was stuff that was already released or from upcoming releases, but there were a few choice rare/exclusive cuts, here they are.

Glasvegas – Daddy’s Gone (Live from KCRW)
I know very little about this band. I just know what my friend Lisa tells me, and according to her they are Jesus wrapped in awesome. Although I’ve learned never to trust her opinion when it comes to UK stuff, since she’s biased. Not a bad track though.

Raphael Saadiq – 100 Yard Dash (101 Yard Remix)
What I said about Glasvegas goes double here. Another good track, but I’m too lazy to Wiki the guy and see who the hell he is right now.

Franz Ferdinand – No You Girls (Vince Clarke Remix)
I’m seeing these guys Sunday in Detroit and I haven’t been so stocked to go to the Motor City Hellhole in years. I’ll give a full report of the awesomeness (and sure-to-be-annoying-Hipsters) when I return. This remix is by Vince Clarke of Depeche Mode/Yazoo/Erasure. Vince Clarke remixing a Franz Ferdinand song is the most gay thing that isn’t actually gay in the history of faux-gay ever.

Black Kids – Look At Me (When I Rock Wichoo) (Kid Gloves Remix)
This is probably the song I like the least on Partie Traumatic, good beat/groove on this remix though.

Slayer
Pyschopathy Red
I Am A Mistake Of Nature
I Am A Mistake Of Nature (Reversed and Sped Up)
Slayer motherfucker!!! SLAYER!! These tracks weren’t from the Record Store Day exclusive vinyl, but from a special single that was also available on Record Store Day. It’s blood red, big surprise. The song Psychopathy Red is about Andrei Chikatilo, the Russian serial killer. Typical happy happy Slayer stuff. The b-side is a slowed down backwards message, which I presume is a translated statement made by Chikatilo. I’ve gone ahead and sped it up/reveresed it for you, while also provided the original version. Enjoy the murder and I’ll see you Monday.

Before They Were Has-Beens

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

I recently pillaged my blogroll of dead and out-dated links and am in need of MP3 blogs to discover and link to. Everyone leave suggestions in the comment section – whore yourself if you want, it’s fun and all the cool kids do it. My blog is read by literally…um…a few people everyday and a link from me will totally make you hot shit forever.

A quick little list of things I look for in a blog:

  • No rapidshit or other download service links – pay for your own server, it’s cheap.
  • No complete album downloads of albums that are easily available
  • At least halfway decent writing
  • A layout that doesn’t look like a monkey shit it out

Most importantly, if you have ever ripped off something I posted and then re-posted it as your own, I will find you an do very bad things to you., like make you listen to Katy Perry records.

I’m currently nursing a rather nasty muscle injury and my mind is not what it usually is, so I apologize in advance for the rather shitty writing you are about to read.

Beats International
Dub Be Good To Me (Norman Cook’s Excursion on the Version)
Dub Be Good To Me (Norman Cook’s Excursion on the Hip Hop Version)
Dub Be Good To Me (Smith and Mighty Remix)
Dub Be Good To Me (Smith and Mighty Mellow Mix)
Dub Be Good To Me (Acappela)
Beats Unlimited was the brainchild of Norman Cook, AKA Fatboy Slim, and was his first foray into music after The Housemartins broke up. A pretty big change of pace if I may say, considering The Housemartins were best known for their acapella renditions of Christian songs. This is clearly a transitional group for Cook, who would go through a few more aliases before settling on Fatboy Slim and making big beat history. Despite being called a dub song, this is classic old-school house with a dash of pop thrown in, and is as dated as 80s dance gets (even though it techincally came out in the 90s). These remixes are from a 12”.

Ministry
I Wanted To Tell Her (12” Remix)
I Wanted To Tell Her (Tongue Tied Mix)
A Walk In The Park
I thought I had all the early Ministry singles, so imagine my joy when I stumbled upon this gem, finding it in Toledo of all places (I guess there ain’t no synthpop party like a Toledo synthpop party). “I Wanted To Tell Her” was the second single off of Ministry’s 1983 debut album With Sympathy, and the highest charting one as well. Like everything on With Sympathy it sounds nothing like what was to come from Al and his not-so-merry band of industrial misanthropes, and yes he does sing with a fake British accent, and yes it’s totally awesome. These are from a 12” single.

Exotic Birds
No Communication
No Communication (Instrumental)
Demon Dance
Demon Dance (Instrumental)
I’ll Never Say Goodbye
Yes, Trent Reznor was in this band, but he’s not on this single. He didn’t sign up until a few years later. My plans for an all “before they were stars” style post isn’t a complete bust however, since the group’s frontman, Andy Kubiszewski, went on to form Stabbing Westard. After that he went on to produce for t.A.T.u, which means he’s probably filthy stinkin’ rich now.

Reran Industrial Bullshit vs. The DMCA (Reposts Day 7)

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

An important notice

I’m suddenly very popular. I know this because I got my first legal notice today. The offending post has been removed by Blogger and I’m worried now that more might face their wrath. Because of this my blog will moving to greener pastures very soon. I don’t know exactly where yet, I’m probably just going to finally bite the bullet and set up LostTurntable.com since I do own the domain name. Should my blog vanish without a trace I would head there for updates.

More information (including who the fuck filed the DMCA report against me) as it develops.

Nothing new tonight, just reposts. Download them before the man finds out.

Front Line Assembly
Digital Tension Dementia (Extended Version)
Vexation
No Limit (Damaged Good Remix)
Lethal Compound (Harmful If Swallowed Mix)
Is/was there a big industrial scene in Canada? I know someone from Skinny Puppy went on to form FLA, but there had to have been a big enough audience to support an industrial scene in the country at one point. I can’t imagine Canadians rocking out to electro-industrial. Of course was their only alternative in the 80s Bryan Adams? It’s beginning to make sense…

Lords Of Acid
Pussy (Disco D’s Ultra Buff Luv Muff Mix)
Pussy (DJ Assault’s Hit It Hard Hit It Quick Mix)
Pussy (I Love Pussy Mix)
This song is actually a scatching social commentary on the condition of cats in Belgium and the need for them to be spayed or neutered. Just kidding, its about vagina.

Lunatic Calm
Leave You Far Behind (Rollercoaster Mix)
Metropol (Lunatics Soundscape Mix)
Speaking of pussy, I thought these guys were Lunatic Clam for years. That sounds like some short of fucked up sexual phrase, like Dirty Sanchez or Rusty Trombone (Mom please don’t click on those links).

Meat Beat Manifesto
Psyche-Out (Sex Skank Stripdown)
Psyche-Out (Sex Skank Mix)
Still anxiously awaiting the genre-crossing, mind-blowing, masturbation-loving Meat Beat Manifesto/Circle Jerks tour.

I Blog About New Order and New Order-Related Products (Reposts Day 2)

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

My unhealthy and completely out-of-character generosity continues with even more requests, tonight it’s all New Order (and related stuff).

Not every New Order song that was requested is getting reposted. Since I first posted many of these tracks New Order has re-released their Factory albums, complete with bonus tracks, and these bonus tracks are mostly the remixes and B-side I put up way before those were even announced. The deluxe editions didn’t include all the remixes though (fucking amateurs) so there’s still a lot of rarities and vinyl-exclusives that I will happily repost here tonight, as well as some added goodies I never got around to posting before.

New Order
Once again, the old stuff first:
I Don’t Care (Bizarre Dub Triangle)
Fine Time (7 Inch Edit)
Fine Time (Messed Around Mix)
Jetstream (Jacques Lu Cont Remix)
Jetstream (Tom Neville Remix Dub)
Jetstream (Richard X Remix)
Jetstream (Arthur Baker Remix)
Jetstream (Tom Neville Remix)
Jetstream (Pete Heller Remix Phela Dub)
Round & Round (Club Mix)
Round & Round (12” Remix)
Everything’s Gone Green (Cicada Remix)

And now the new shit:
The Kiss Of Death
Perfect Pit
World In Motion (No Alla Violenza Mix)
World In Motion (Subbuteo Mix)
World In Motion (Subbuteo Dub)
Confused Beats
Confusion (Rough Mix)
Confused Beats is just the beats to “Confusion” and “The Kiss Of Death” is the dub mix to “The Perfect Kiss” your guess is as good as mine as to what the fuck “Perfect Pit” is, however.

But wait, there’s more!

The Other Two
Tasty Fish (Pascal Mix 12”)
Tasty Fish (O.T. Mix)
The Other Two was a New Order side project, consisting of Gillian Gilbert and Stephen Morris. These two remixes are also requests and have been posted before.

The End-All Urgh! (A Work In Progress)

Friday, February 6th, 2009

First things first – RIP Lux Interior…

Now, onto the business, and this business was much, much delayed. In April of 2006 I put up the soundtrack Urgh! to much fanfare around the blogosphere (God I hate that “word”) so much so that I had to get a server upgrade. Unfortunately, as it was pointed out to me several months ago those files were recorded on a turntable that spun too fucking fast. Since then I had been meaning to re-record the tracks and repost them, but life can be a bitch.

Well, I was finally motivated to get off my ass and fix my mistake (for reasons that I will get into momentarily) and now I present to you the newly re-recorded version of Urgh! A Music War – The Album, now at the correct speed and with added hiss and click removal!

As many of you may know, the original soundtrack to Urgh! didn’t have everything on it that was on the movie. I originally had some of those tracks on here, ripped from a copy of the movie I rented at my local video store. I was never happy with the quality of those recordings either, so I am going to re-record them as well. Now, I’m sure you’re thinking, “what video store still has a copy of Urgh!?” Well, sadly the answer is “none” because the awesome Head’s Together video store is going out of business at the end of the month and they are liquidating their amazing inventory of classic, cult and just plain bizarre movies. I’ve already bought a ton of great shit, from the strange 80s slasher flick The Burning to Style Wars and a VHS copy of The Punk Rock Movie.

Oh, and I also bought Urgh!

Boo-ya.

I’m in the process of getting my VCR hooked up to my computer and running correctly, but once I do I’m going to do what I can to not only have the audio tracks from the VHS online, but the whole goddamn movie.

You’re welcome.

02/09 Update:
Finished recording the VHS tape. Here are the tracks that are in the movie but not on the soundtrack.
